There is no doubt that the Nokia 7100 makes an impact. It is a stylish handset with some interesting features that are fashionable and may well inspire, but overall is there enough here to attract the buyers in a world of impressive and forward thinking innovation?

It is somewhat unfair to say that the 7100 is all about looks, but as we go on even readers here may come to that conclusion. This is a very stylish looking phone that takes a tried and tested concept – the slide package – and while not changing it makes it look the part. Unlike many it doesn’t feel as though it is about to come apart when the slide is operated, and the choice of colours used give buyers a bit of freedom of individuality. It weighs in quite well at just over 100g and is neatly sized, and it is a generally well designed model in terms of usability. A two inch screen is nothing particularly noteworthy, but if that’s all you need it does the job, but there is s concern that it may not be bright enough in some kinds of regular daylight.

The same old problem that affects many phones – the lack of a standard headphone jack – also affects this one. Users are limited to listening to what is a decent enough music player through very cheap and rather unsavoury plastic headphones that come as part of the package, and the result is not satisfactory for a modern mobile handset. There are a wide variety of formats that can be played here along with an FM radio, but we can’t see anyone buying this for the audio capability and nor are any owners going to recommend it for such.

Things really begin to look problematic for the 7100 with the camera. Not only does it not support a flash system or an autofocus, but with only 1.3 megapixels it is not going to win any friends. Cameras of this ilk went out of the door years ago, and there is absolutely nothing to recommend this very poor choice of camera by Nokia. In truth we cannot understand why such an esteemed maker has included this poor system in one of its handsets – a disaster all round.

The Nokia 7100 Supernova isn't the best phone but there are hundreds of other mobilephones with affordable mobile phone deals. It's a good move if you want discounts and save money.

There are those who love the Blackberry range and those who don’t. The Storm 2 will be loved in equal measures as it is hated, as that is the way these things go. It is a logical progression from the original – successful and much loved – Storm, but is it enough of a change to make it worth trading up to?

If you put this and the original Storm side by side you would be hard pushed to see the difference. That’s no bad thing, however, if you like the look of the Storm! Blackberry’s are not the smallest, nor the lightest, handsets on the market and this one weighs in at 160g, but it still looks the part with its big screen style and typical businesslike appearance, and will appeal to those who are converts without much help. One thing that divides people over the Storm, and this one too, is the characteristic click that the screen makes; it’s either useful or annoying depending on which side of the tracks you are on. The major difference, however, between this and the preceding Storm is the one thing that is going to either make you want it or hate it – there is no keyboard, it is replaced by a virtual onscreen version.  To use, that’s a sticking point – Blackberry users will, to a man, want a keyboard with proper buttons on.

Like all Blackberry models the Storm 2 is not sold on its music playing capabilities. The media player is decent enough, though, and the inclusion of a standard 3.5mm headphone jack is a welcome sight, but there is nothing of any special quality here, and nor would regular users expect there to be. Sound for calling and conference calling is of the highest order – responsive and clear, and very usable indeed.

The screen is very responsive, so you only need a light touch. Another cool feature of this phone is the pinch feature that lets you zoom in on small text. However, the screen is hard to see in bright sunlight.

Keeping you connected, the HTC HD2 offers stereo Bluetooth, HSDPA 7.2Mbps, Wi-Fi and HSUPA 2Mbps. You also get Opera and Internet Explorer Mobile 6. You will find that scrolling and browsing is fast and easy, but they both have their own glitches. Flash will only work in Internet Explorer and even then it doesn’t always work reliably. Also the IE does not support multi touch; so really, the choice of browser comes down to individual need and preference.

With just these features, we can say that the HTC HD2 mobilephone has a lot to offer. If you like to save money, consider getting online deals with free laptop and mobile phone if you plan on getting one or just stick to the affordable monthly pay.

What will appeal is the way it looks; the E72 is a pretty device that – at 10mm – is a front runner in the slim line stakes, and weighing 128g is pretty decent for such a powerful device. That it carries a full keyboard is an achievement given its diminutive dimensions.

With a 2.36 inch TFT screen, a 16 million colour model that is perfectly adequate, sitting alongside the keyboard on the front panel the overall look is quite sophisticated and businesslike – something that will undoubtedly appeal to those who like the E71.

With the now pre-requisite accelerometer and a typical Nokia track pad also part of the package it is easy to use and versatile, and we are most pleased to see the inclusion of a 3.5mm standard jack, allowing the user to listen to the quite impressive sound provided by this pretty machine with their own chosen headset. FM radio, RDS and a wide variety of MP3 and other music formats are all included, and the music player is a very capable and impressive set up that will not disappoint those looking for a capable and decent sounding set up.

A selection of ringtone choices and the handy vibrate setting are now items that feature on even the least expensive of phones and are very much evident on the E72, while there is a camera present that will please those who are keen on using their handsets for snapshots.

If keeping in touch is your thing and you want a handset with a touch of class then you will undoubtedly be interested in this, the INQ Mini 3G. It’s fresh and funky, cute and functional and on paper it delivers the goods, but how about when it comes to the crunch?

This is, mark our words, a very attractive mobile phone. A lot of effort has gone into making this a pretty and stylish handset and it pays off in many ways, and although it is by no means the smallest or lightest – at just under 130g – of handsets it is very neat indeed. With a 2.2 inch screen that is adequate but far from special, and the very attractive chrome detailing this is one to be seen with, and the neat if old idea of snap on coloured covers adds individuality to a very funky looking handset.

In terms of use it is pretty handy, too with a well organized interface that is clearly aimed at keeping contacts to the fore, and as this is a handset designed with easy social networking in mind there is the convenient and simple handling of all social networking applications including the ubiquitous Facebook very much to the fore. It’s a cleverly designed system that will be picked up easily by the young, but users who are more set in their ways may find it a bit puzzling to begin with. 

A very standard music player forms the backbone of the audio system on the INQ Mini, and while the sound for calling and such is very clear and that for music pretty decent there is not much here to shout about. This may be a major oversight by the makers as the youth market is very much geared towards the music and media side of things.

This is a sleek device that looks slightly out of the ordinary, something that is more of a positive than it ever will be a negative. It has very modern curves and the black finish is of the minute, while a very nice looking 2.8 inch screen, touch screen of course, looks the part and fits in nicely. We have to commend Samsung on the very clever and superb to use keyboard – a great slide out version that may well set the standard for others to follow. It feels good, is easy to use and offers superb practicality.

The screen set up is decent too and the operating system is easy to use, and like many in this class of phone there are shortcuts to the usual social networking sites – a must for today’s youth market. This is a success all round and we must also add that the touch screen is one of the best we have experienced.

It is always a pity when first impressions lad to an increased air of excitement and then something brings you back down to earth. The camera is by no means brilliant, but not the worst on the market either. At three megapixels and without flash it offers a basic performance that will be fine for the odd snapshot but inadequate beyond that. We are a little disappointed with this after the runaway success of the way the phone looks and handles.

If you want a decent camera you get one; it’s not the best in the world at just five megapixels but it offers a dual LED flash and the usual autofocus, and video recording comes at a sensible and usable level – 15 frames per second – for such a mid range phone.

The familiar interface is a Nokia standard, and one that has been superseded by a new edition used on more expensive Nokia phones. There may be a case for complaint from some here, but in truth the difference is negligible and the integration of systems is seamless and pretty decent. There are some functions missing that you will find on rivals at a similar price – there is no office document viewing facility, the gallery is behind the times, social networking is not up to the standards of some and it is not at all up to the task for fast motion gaming. These are negatives that apply to the phone probably as it is primarily an updated version o an existing model as opposed to an entirely new range.

Bluetooth capability comes as standard, there is a decent sound system and the memory – standard ay 1GB and expandable by microSD to 16GB is adequate – but the browsing is below par and the lack of a standard 3.5mm jack renders the music player second rate.

We will not say this is a poor phone as the 6600i is a decent effort, but it is all too obviously a revamp of an older model and it shows; in truth, there are better models from rivals on the market, at similar prices, and this one may struggle against strong opposition.
